Jogjakarta, 1 May 2007, Around 50 people who call themselves the Islamic Defenders’ front (FPI) attempted to disperse a mayday rally that was organized by the Working People’s Alliance of Jogjakarta. This alliance was established by The National Liberation Party of Unity (PAPERNAS) along with other democratic groups.

“The rally begun at 9 am. The participants chanted their slogan “End the contract system, Job creation through The National Industrialization Program”.

The rally stopped at the intersection in front of the City Post office. All of a sudden fifty people from the FPI grabbed the leader of the rally. So that the rally could continue, the people participating in the action joined hands to make a people’s chain. The action then continued with political speeches being given by representatives from every organization participating in the action.

The FPI members did try again to disperse the action however the people’s chain was successful in securing the action. Finally the FPI members left the action having been unsuccessful in their attempts to disperse the May Day action in Yogyakarta .
